Morning came early on Day 35. I think I was mid-dream when I woke up to sounds of the kids blending smoothies.
I decided to run today… with “real feel” temps in the single digits. I was able to get into my winter running clothes (hooray), but I don’t typically do a lot of running in such cold temperatures. I usually hit the treadmill instead. Well, I was so focused on the logistics of where I wanted to run that I didn’t stop to consider the wind. This isn’t a new concept to me so it was even more embarrassing that I made such a rookie mistake. I didn’t realize the error until I turned to head home and found myself running into the wind – not good. The reason this is a bad thing is that by this point I had begun to sweat. Well, we know what happens when freezing winds hit sweat, yep, they make the body’s core temp begin to drop. This is why Les Stroud says, “You sweat, you die,” when talking about dealing with frigid temps.
My, now tired, legs were freezing, but my upper body was in worse shape. The further I went, the colder I got. I contemplated calling the Husband to come get me. I’ve had to do this before in the cold. That time it was because I adhered to the “don’t run into the wind at the end” rule. The wind shifted on me so I shifted with it to prevent freezing. I called him when I reached my mile goal, and he picked me up. I didn’t call him though, I kept going (I was headed back to the start anyway), hoping that I would get there before I got in trouble.
It took me about two hours to warm back up. Hopefully I won’t make such a rookie mistake again.
